Who writes our content

Our reviews are researched and edited by Lucie Bricks, our Reviews Editor. Lucie is not a doctor, dietitian, nurse or pharmacist. Our reviews summarize labels, published research and official sources. They are not a substitute for advice from a professional who knows your health history.

Check with a professional before you start

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplement, especially if you:

  • Take prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
  • Are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have a long-term condition such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney or liver disease, or a thyroid condition.
  • Have surgery coming up.
  • Are buying for someone under 18.

Do not stop, delay or change a prescribed treatment because of something you read here.

How supplements are regulated

In the US, the FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. Makers are responsible for their own products and claims. Statements on a supplement label or ad have usually not been evaluated by the FDA. You can read more on the FDA dietary supplements page and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.

Research has limits

Our evidence grades describe the research on individual ingredients, not on the finished product. Study results are averages and may not apply to you. Research also changes over time, and a review can fall behind newer findings.

Emergencies

If you think you are having a medical emergency or a serious reaction, call 911 right away. For a possible poisoning or overdose, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Report a bad reaction

If a supplement causes a side effect, stop taking it, contact your doctor, and consider reporting it to the FDA through MedWatch. Reports help the FDA spot unsafe products.

Accuracy

We work to keep our content accurate and current, but we cannot promise that every page is complete or free of errors. If you spot a problem, email contact@healthamu.com.
